Surabaya DLH Simulates Spraying Organic Solutions At Benowo Landfill So That The Smell Doesn't Reach GBT During FIFA Supervision
SURABAYA - The Surabaya City Environment Agency (DLH) held a simulation of spraying an organic solution to retain the smell of garbage at the Benowo Final Disposal Site (TPA), Hero City, East Java.
Head of the Surabaya City Environment Service (DLH) Hebi Agus Djuniantoro said the spraying simulation at Benowo TPA this time was to anticipate the smell when FIFA carried out supervision on March 26, 2023.
"So there are several points that we have to monitor for spraying, the first is at the landfill waste pile, the second is at the Benowo PSEL gasification, access to the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium (GBT) from the toll road, access to the landfill, to the area where scavengers live," he said. Hebi said as reported by ANTARA, Friday, March 24.
This time, the simulation of spraying an organic odor-retaining solution uses two trucks from the Fire and Rescue Service (DPKP) and several other spray cars from DLH. The five focus points of the spraying were spread on the cars to prevent odors.
Hebi explained, if today's simulation is successful, it will be used as a standard operating procedure (SOP) when the U-20 world cup match is held. Because this simulation is not just to get rid of odors, but also to eliminate flies around the GBT Stadium.
"Later we will sterilize the GBT so that the players feel comfortable during the World Cup, there are no odor disturbances or anything else," he said.
Hebi guarantees that the solution that is sprayed does not endanger human health, because the materials used are made of organic matter. For spraying, he said, divided into two sessions, morning starting at 07.30 WIB, and afternoon starting at 12.00 WIB.
"Spraying it in the morning and afternoon. Why during the day? Because it is feared that the sprayed solution will evaporate, so it cannot eliminate the smell," he said.

Hebi said that while the spraying process was running, all activities in the Benowo landfill area were stopped, starting from trucking traffic to the landfill, gasification of the Benowo PSEL, and so on.
"This gasification (in PSEL) can also cause an odor, so we are temporarily shutting down, and we are diverting the truck activities at night. So when FIFA supervises us, we make sure the smell is zero," said Hebi.
