Doctor Orthopedi: Sports Can Prevent Osteoporosis

JAKARTA - Orthopedic and traumatological surgeons say that regular exercise can be one of the excellent efforts to prevent osteoporosis.

"We need to pay attention to a number of things that can build bone strength optimally, namely regular and measurable exercise, especially strength training to build muscle strength," said the orthopedic and traumatological surgeon from Siloam Hospitals Mampang, Dr. Henry Suhendra SpOT (K) in his statement in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Saturday, October 29.

Doctor Henry explained that osteoporosis is known as a disease in the elderly, but prevention measures must be taken early on.

"Therefore, since a person is a teenager, it is necessary to pay attention to a number of things that can build bone strength, because osteoporosis is caused by a decrease in the body's ability to regenerate bones so that bone density decreases," he said.

This decline in regeneration ability, he said, will usually start when a person enters the age of 35 years.

"The peak of the bone mass is 90 percent achieved when a person is 19 years old, while 10 percent will be fulfilled by a person aged 30 to 35 years," he said.

In addition to regular exercise, he said, each individual also needs to pay attention to the intake of good nutrition or nutrition, as well as ensure optimal fulfillment of daily protein needs, vitamins and minerals.

"What is also no less important is having to ensure optimal levels of vitamin D in the body. Therefore, periodic education and socialization are needed regarding the importance of exercise and eating balanced nutritious foods and ensuring vitamin D levels in the body," he said.

He added that the public needs to be reminded that reduced density or bone composition has an impact on bone loss.

"Prices of nutrition, vitamin D and exercise will have a positive effect on muscle and bone tissues, so it is very necessary to pay attention to them," he said.
