Earthquake In The Arfak Manokwari Mountains, West Papua, Shakes Are Felt By Residents
MANOKWARI - An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale occurred at a location 0.77 latitude - 133.21 east longitude, about 72 kilometers northwest of the Arfak Mountains Regency, West Papua at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The earthquake shock at 20:43 WIT was felt by residents of Manokwari and its surroundings.
Head of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Manokwari Station Daniel Randi said the epicenter of the earthquake was in a land area so it had no potential to cause a tsunami.
The shaking of the earthquake which lasted for about one minute was quite surprising for the residents of Manokwari.
"The earthquake was quite strong, we were all shocked," said Fredy, a resident of the Wosi Dalam area, Manokwari, as reported by Antara, Monday, May 16.
He said that the Manokwari area and its surroundings, especially in South Manokwari Regency, had been frequently hit by earthquakes, although the scale was not too large.
