Tulungagung District Attorney's Office Sends Letter To Attorney General Regarding Clemency Of Death Convicts In Robbery And Murder Cases Of Teacher's Family

TULUNGAGUNG - The District Attorney's Office of Tulungagung, East Java, has written to the Attorney General's Office regarding a request for clemency filed by a death row convict in a robbery case involving the murder of a teacher's family, about 16 years ago.

"Last December (2021) we sent a letter to the AGO asking for clarity on the clemency proposed by the death row convict Sadji. However, there has been no response," said Kajari Tulungagung Mujiharto, as quoted by Antara, Thursday, January 13.

The application for clemency itself is carried out without going through a review process. Sadji, who was proven on trial to be the mastermind of the robbery as well as the executioner of the murder, immediately opted for a lighter sentence by applying for clemency to the President, which was sent through the Indonesian Attorney General's Office.

"Because the punishment is the death penalty, the convict then applies for clemency," he said.

Convict Sadji is currently still languishing in the Class IIB Tulungagung Penitentiary. He is waiting for his legal effort to escape the snares of the death penalty to be granted by the President.

However, it has been six years since the 2016 clemency application was filed.

The murder case took place when Mujiharto was still serving as the Head of Public Prosecution at the Tulungagung District Attorney's Office.

The bloody incident began with a robbery at Sadji's house, which is located on Diponegoro Street, Alley No. 2/10, Karangwaru Village, Tulungagung District, January 9, 2006.

In the robbery, Sadji and his wife Wiwik Sudarwati, as well as a grandson, Okky Putra Wirawan, became victims of the murder of Sadji and his gang of five people. The perpetrators consisted of four men and one woman.

One convict Edy Sunaryo was sentenced to death in December 2006 by the panel of judges.

Edy Sunaryo was sentenced to the maximum sentence for being proven to have intentionally killed the Boyolangu State High School chemistry teacher, Sadji, and his wife, Wiwik Sudarwati, as well as a grandson, Okky Putra Wirawan.

In fact at trial it was revealed that Edi stabbed the victim's chest with a knife, then slit Sadji's throat.

Meanwhile, four other defendants who helped Edi, namely Heru Purnanto, Samsul Bari, Rizky Fatkul Arifin, and Siti Syarofah, were given lighter sentences.

Samsul Bari, who helped in the crime of premeditated murder, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Meanwhile, the defendants Heru Purnanto (30) and Rizky Fatkul Arifin (20), were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Finally, Siti Syarofah was sentenced to 10 years in prison, less than the prosecutor's demand of 15 years in prison.
