After Receiving A Booster Dose, Mexican President Lopez Obrador Is Infected With COVID-19 Again
JAKARTA - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Monday announced he had been infected with COVID-19 for the second time, saying he had mild symptoms and confirmed he would continue to work in isolation until he recovered.
President Lopez Obrador, 68, previously tested positive for COVID-19 in January last year. He sounded hoarse during Monday's morning press conference, prompting him to say he will have tests at a later date.
"Even though the symptoms are mild, I will remain in isolation and will only be doing office work and communicating virtually until I recover," President Lopez Obrador said in a tweet.
The left-wing leader, a former smoker who had a heart attack in 2013, also has hypertension but his previous COVID-19 infection was mild, Mexican officials said. It is known, President Lopez Obrador received a booster shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine on December 7.
For now, Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez will replace the president during daily morning press conferences and other official actions, President Lopez Obrador added.
It is known that critics have attacked the Mexican leader for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, arguing he underestimated its seriousness during the initial phase of the health emergency.
The president is also rarely seen in public wearing a mask, except on planes, with Mexico having imposed relatively few restrictions on travelers entering the country.
Nevertheless, He strongly urges the public to be vaccinated against the virus, and nearly all of Mexico City's adult population has had at least two shots.
