Whirlwind In The Timor-Arafur Sea, BMKG Reminds NTT Residents To Beware Of Potential Rain And Wind At Christmas

KUPANG - Head of the El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Agung Sudiono Abadi reminded residents to be aware of extreme weather in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) due to cyclonic circulation patterns.

"The cyclonic circulation pattern (vortex) is formed in the Timor-Arafura Sea and is indicated as a suspect tropical cyclone seed area," he said when contacted in Kupang, Antara, Thursday, December 23.

He said this was related to the potential for extreme weather in the NTT region during December 22-26 2021. Agung explained that the suspected area indicated was moving slowly towards the southwest towards the south of NTT or in the waters north of Australia.

This condition has an impact on the growth of rain clouds in NTT so that people must increase their awareness of the effects of extreme weather such as heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

He said based on weather prediction modeling, in the next few days, especially on Saturday, December 25-Sunday, December 26, the potential for tropical cyclones to appear is quite high.

Agung said the potential for heavy rains accompanied by strong winds occurred in 22 districts/cities throughout NTT, so he appealed to the public not to panic but to increase their awareness of the potential for extreme weather.

This extreme weather potential can cause hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, landslides, fallen trees, and lightning strikes.

He advised the public in NTT to continue to monitor the development of information and early warnings for extreme weather from the BMKG through the 24-hour weather information service at the El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station with contact number (0380) 881613, WhatsApp 081139404264 or access the IOS and android applications BMKG Info.
