Celebrate Number 21, El Salvador Buys 21 Bitcoins Again

JAKARTA - The government of El Salvador continues to celebrate important days by buying more Bitcoin (BTC). This was stated by President Nayib Bukele who announced a new purchase of 21 BTC on Tuesday, December 21.

The purchase was worth about US$1,036,000 (Rp14.7 billion) as of last Tuesday. According to Bukele, as Cointelegraph reported, this latest BTC investment from El Salvador is to celebrate “the last 21 days of the 21st year of the 21st century” and commemorate the scarcity of Bitcoin as its supply is limited to 21 million BTC only.

President Bukele also noted that the entire size of El Salvador's territory is reported to be around 21,041 square kilometers, which according to Bukele, is no coincidence as El Salvador was the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender.

At the time of the purchase, BTC was trading just over $49,000, according to data from CoinGecko.

Buying Bitcoin continues to be a way to celebrate occasions and toy with dates or numbers that are meaningful to El Salvador after the country's government bought its first 200 BTC in early September amid efforts to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender on September 7.

On November 26, El Salvador celebrated Black Friday by buying 100 BTC for around 54,000 per BTC, raising a total of 1,220 BTC.

The Salvadoran government previously made a massive 420-BTC purchase in October shortly after FTX crypto exchange Sam Bankman-Fried raised $420 million from 69 investors. Both appear to be using “420” to refer to the slang “cannabis culture for marijuana” as some industry figures have hinted.
