One Step Again Gabriel Boric Becomes The Youngest President In Chile's History, Still At 35

JAKARTA - A history will be written in Chile. A man who is still 35 years old, Gabriel Boric will soon become the new leader of the country.

As a young man, Gabriel Boric was a former student protest leader. And soon he will win the historic battle to become Chile's youngest president.

Boric has promised ambitious changes for a country that has been rocked in recent years by mass demonstrations against inequality and corruption. When Boric won his left bloc's candidacy to run for president, he made a bold promise.

"If Chile is the cradle of neoliberalism, it will be its grave too," he said.

"Don't be afraid young people are changing this country," he continued, as quoted by the BBC, Monday, December 20.

"We are a generation that has emerged in public life demanding that our rights be respected as rights and not treated like consumer goods or businesses," Boric said in his victory speech to thousands of supporters, most of them young people.

"We know that justice for the rich continues to exist, and justice for the poor, and we will no longer allow the poor to continue paying the price for Chile's inequality," he continued.

With 99.95% of the votes counted, Boric won with 55.87% of the vote, securing victory over his right-wing opponent, Jose Antonio Kast, who trailed by 44.13%. Boric will be sworn in as President on March 11.

Sunday morning, Kast handed the election over to Boric and congratulated his opponent on his big win.

"As of today he is the President-elect of Chile and deserves all our respect and constructive collaboration. Chile always comes first," Kast tweeted.
