Attorney General Reminds Prosecutors To Be Careful In Using Wiretapping Authority

JAKARTA - Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin reminded his staff to be careful in using the authority to conduct wiretapping as stipulated in the Law on the Prosecutor's Office which was recently passed.

The DPR has ratified the Draft Law (RUU) concerning Amendments to Law (UU) Number 16 of 2004 concerning the Indonesian Attorney General's Office. One of its contents gives the prosecutor's authority to conduct wiretapping.

"Be careful and don't misuse this authority because it is related to the right to privacy," said Burhanuddin in a written statement quoted by Antara, Tuesday, December 7.

Burhanuddin said the new Prosecutor's Law had strengthened the legal basis of the institution in conducting wiretapping and organizing a monitoring center in the field of criminal acts.

"Through this law, the prosecutor's office has a strong legal basis for wiretapping," he said.

Burhanuddin added that wiretapping was not only needed at the investigation stage but also at the stage of prosecution, execution, and the search for fugitives.

With this authority, the Adhyaksa Corps will add one center to its structure, namely a monitoring center that will support the implementation of the wiretapping task.

"We will add one more center, namely a monitoring center that will support the implementation of the wiretapping task," said Burhanuddin.

Burhanuddin is grateful that the Bill on Amendments to Law Number 16 of 2004 concerning the Indonesian Attorney's Office has been passed by the DPR.

He hopes that the new Prosecution Law will strengthen the position of the prosecutor's office, both in terms of organization and authority.

"With the issuance of this new law, I hope we can use every authority that is inherent in us," said Burhanuddin.

The Attorney General reminded the public prosecutor's office not to focus on one single authority, namely prosecution, while ignoring other powers.

"Let's introspect and do the best what the law has mandated," he said.

Burhanuddin asked his staff to pay close attention to the new law and immediately prepare the means and derivative regulations as a follow-up to the law so that the novelties regulated in the new law can be implemented immediately.
