Thailand Prohibits Entry Of Travelers From Eight African Countries, Which Countries Are They?

BANGKOK - Thai authorities said on Saturday they would bar entry to people traveling from eight African countries, designated as high-risk areas for the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus.

From December travel from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe will be banned, senior health official Opas Karnkawinpong told a news conference.

Thailand will close the registration of tours from the named countries from Saturday, November 27.

The announcement came as a number of countries in Asia tightened their borders due to concerns about the B11529 variant. The World Health Organization has designated Omicron a "variant of concern", noting that it is likely to be more infectious than other variants. "We have informed the airlines and these countries about this," Opas said.

He added that travelers from other African countries were not allowed to take advantage of Thailand's quarantine-free travel scheme earmarked for COVID-19 vaccine recipients.
