Canelo Alvarez Challenged By Mairis Briedis Cruiserweight Champion, Dare?
JAKARTA - After defeating Caleb Plant last Sunday in Las Vegas, Canelo Alvarez became the super middleweight boxing champion. But now he is being challenged by cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis.
To accept the challenge the Latvian boxer, Canelo need to move up two weight categories. That is, the weight must increase significantly.
"It seems impossible for Canelo to find an attractive fight even at middle or light weight class, is he ready to take on a proper challenge from cruiserweight?" Briedis posted on Instagram.
Briedis currently hold a 28-1 record, with the only loss coming against current world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. However, he has 20 KO wins on his record.
It's hard to imagine Mexican boxer Alvarez taking on this challenge. The reason is, gaining weight is a struggle considering his style is very dependent on speed and athleticism.
Apart from that, he also had further duties in the light heavyweight division despite beating Sergey Kovalev. He will likely have to face the winner of the Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol fight to become fully undisputed in the division.
Never before has a boxer been the undisputed super middleweight world champion. However, Canelo has achieved this feat after he ended the unbeaten run held by Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and Plant.
Yes, a boxer like Floyd Mayweather alone has never been able to become the undisputed four-belt champion during his illustrious career.
