Germany Crazy! 33,949 COVID-19 Positive People In A Day, This Is A New Record

JAKARTA - The German government recorded 33,949 new cases of COVID-19, the highest daily spike since the start of the pandemic in 2020 ahead of a meeting of state health ministers on Thursday, November 4.

Countries across Europe are reporting spikes in COVID-19 infections, sparking debate about reimposing restrictions and strategies to get more citizens to be vaccinated.

The increase in the daily number of cases was likely due to a holiday in Germany on Monday which caused delays in data collection. The previous record of 33,777 cases was recorded on December 18.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's acting chief of staff, Helga Braun, said German states needed to make more rapid progress in providing booster doses of vaccines for the elderly.

"It should have been done a long time ago," he told broadcaster ZDF. As of Wednesday, November 3, only 6.7 percent of citizens over the age of 60 in Germany had received a booster dose. according to data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases.

The elderly are also more likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients reached 3.62 per 100,000 population as of Wednesday, up from 1.65 in early October.

However, for people over the age of 60 the increase reached 8.27 per 100,000 population.
