JAKARTA - Meta Platforms announced that they will be discontinuing the "Facebook News" feature on their social media apps in the UK, France, and Germany, until the end of this year.

"Users will still be able to view links to news articles, and European news publishers will still have access to their Facebook accounts and pages once these changes are implemented in December," Meta said.

However, Facebook will not form a new commercial deal for news content on "Facebook News", or offer product innovations for news publishers in these countries.

"Facebook News," which curates the news in the form of a link, is a tab dedicated to the Facebook app's marker section.

"The news accounts for less than 3% of what people around the world see on their Facebook feed, so news discovery is a small part of Facebook's experience for most people," Meta said in a blog post.

Together with Big Tech's company Alphabet, the company is increasingly under pressure from legislators around the world to share a higher percentage of its advertising revenue with news publishers.

Meta has started blocking news on their Facebook and Instagram platforms for all users in Canada in response to a new law requiring the internet giant to pay news publishers. Australia implemented a similar law in 2021.
