JAKARTA - Not long ago, Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie Setiadi revealed that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proposed the establishment of the Social Media Council.

"UNESCO came to us with a Social Media Council proposal. Okay, we will discuss it, but what is certain is that the control must be from the community as well," Budi said, quoting the official broadcast.

According to the Minister of Communication and Information, UNESCO's offer to form a Social Media Council or Social Media Council is intended to address phenomena on social media that cause many concerns, not only in Indonesia, but also in the international world.

In economic activity on social media platforms, Minister Budi Arie gave an example of e-commerce disruption which is now growing quite rapidly, such as the rampant practice of buying and selling online through social media or social commerce (S-Commerce).

According to Budi, the presence of the Social Media Council with community involvement from various elements and ecosystems will be the government's concern so that digital spaces are controlled by various parties.

So for example academics, members of the press, the community, religious leaders control each other. Because once again, other countries in Europe and America are also a concern if there is no control, but not control in the sense (such as the era) of the New Order," he said.

Budi also had said that the mentioned institution would become an institution such as a clearing house, which would later have a spirit like the press council. Where they will review whether a content is appropriate to share on social media or not.
