JAKARTA - United States Senator Chuck Schumer on Wednesday 21 June will call for a "comprehensive law" to advance and ensure protection against artificial intelligence (AI).

In April, Schumer circulated a framework outlining a new regulatory regime to "prevent potential damage to our country while at the same time ensuring that the United States advances and leads in this transformative technology."
In a speech planned for Wednesday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Schumer will confirm the need for cross-party congressional action.
"We have no choice but to admit that AI changes are happening, and in many cases there is already... We have to create a encouraging plan - not hinder - innovation in this new world of AI, and that means asking some important questions," Schumer said, as quoted from footage released by his office. "We will work very hard to create comprehensive laws. Because this is very important, we will do everything we can to succeed."
Congress is currently divided narrowly and has not yet reached a consensus in the AI law.
"AI is unlike anything we've faced before, and it may be very difficult for the law to deal with any problems," Schumer said. "AI could be our most spectacular innovation, a power that could trigger a new era of technological advances, scientific discoveries, and industrial power."

"Congress should encourage, not hinder innovation," Schumer said. "But if people don't believe that innovation can be done safely, it will hinder AI's development and even prevent us from advancing."
