JAKARTA - The automotive industry in Indonesia, especially two-wheelers, has improved after the Covid-19 pandemic. This is proven by several positive sales achievements in the last few months.
According to a statistical data report from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), released on Tuesday, September 12, the sales figure for two-wheeled vehicles during August domestically was 534,379 units. This figure is up 12.39% on a monthly basis (month-to-month/mtm) compared to July 2023 when 475,428 units were sold.
However, the sales figures for August are still behind the highest local sales in March, amounting to 633,155 units, then second place in January with a total of 615,416 units, and last February which reached 575,502 units.
With the increase in figures obtained in August, AISI recorded motorbike sales so far totaling 4,211,737 units during the first eight months of 2023 or an increase of 35.9 percent
In the first eight months, sales of two-wheeled vehicles were dominated by scooters at 89.64 percent. Meanwhile, the sports category contributed 5.19 percent, and underbone with 5.16 percent.

Positive results were not only obtained from domestic sales, but also in the export sector. In August, AISI recorded that exports of two-wheeled vehicles reached 55,247 units. The achievement in August ranked second after May with 55,743 vehicles.
In total, export results achieved in the motorbike industry reached 377,412 units during the first eight months of this year. This means that cumulatively exports decreased by 23.5 percent. Just like domestic sales, exports are dominated by the scooter category.
Until August 2023, the scooter segment contributed the most export revenue with 51.84 percent. Meanwhile, underbone achieved good results with 23.31 percent and sports with 24.85 percent of the total.
These figures are certainly not surprising considering that the public's need and demand for two-wheeled vehicles is quite high in Indonesia. Apart from being practical, motorbikes are often used and in demand because they are more affordable than four-wheeled vehicles and save on fuel.
Moreover, currently the development of electric-powered two-wheeled vehicles is growing quite rapidly. Apart from creating clean air, electric motorbikes are now slowly becoming popular with the public thanks to their practicality and efficiency which makes it easier for riders.
Meanwhile, in an effort to strengthen public enthusiasm for motorbikes, AISI has announced the holding of the Indonesia Motorcycle Show (IMOS) 2023. This event will take place from 25 to 29 October 2023 at ICE BSD, Tangerang.
