BMKG Calls The M 5.1 Earthquake Sumbawa Triggered By The Indo-Australian Plate

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the Sumbawa earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 5.1 was triggered by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate.

"By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono in Jakarta, Tuesday, November 7, confiscated by Antara.

He added that the results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake had a thrust mechanism.

"The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," he said.

He said the epicenter of the earthquake that occurred at 12:36.38 WIB was located at coordinates 10.35 south latitude and 118.07 east longitude, or precisely located at sea at a distance of 132 km southwest of Kodi, Southwest Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, at a depth of 38 km.

He said, based on the estimation of the shock map (shakemap), this earthquake caused shocks in the areas of Plampang, Empang, Tarano, Sumbawa with an intensity scale of II MMI (modified mercy intensity), meaning that vibrations were felt by several people, light objects that were hung swayed).

"Until now, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake," he said.

He added that until 12.55 WIB, the results of BMKG monitoring had not shown any aftershock activity.

He appealed to the public to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake.

"Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house," he said.

In addition, he also appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified.
