Inaugurating Sei Selayur Wastewater Processing, Jokowi Hopes To Reduce Pollution In The Musi River

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated the operation of a domestic wastewater treatment plant in Sei Selayur, Palembang City, South Sumatra Province (Sumsel), Thursday, October 26.

"This wastewater treatment system is very important to improve public health, as well as improve environmental quality," he said at the inauguration ceremony which was broadcast online by the Presidential Secretariat (Setpres), Thursday, October 26, which was confiscated by Antara.

Jokowi revealed that the presence of the domestic wastewater treatment system will reduce water pollution in the Musi River.

"We know that the Musi River has been polluted with waste, so it can endanger the health of the people here, especially the people around the Musi River," he said.

Jokowi explained that the construction of a centralized domestic waste water management system in Palembang City used Rp624 billion from the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget, Rp24 billion from the Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget, and Rp690 billion from the Australian Government.

"I hope that the project, which now only reaches 10 percent of the population of Palembang City, can continue so that the Musi River is clean, beautiful, and the people living around it can be healthier and more safe to move," he said.

The inauguration ceremony for the domestic wastewater treatment plant in Sei Selayur was also attended by the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams as well as officials from the central government and local governments.
