Kaesang Said About The Constitutional Court's Decision Allows Regional Heads To Be Presidential And Vice Presidential Candidates

JAKARTA - Chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) Kaesang Pangarep said the decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) opened up opportunities for his brother and Mayor of Solo, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to become vice presidential candidate.

"Maybe giving the Mayor of Solo an opportunity for the life of the president, I don't know," said the youngest son of President Joko Widodo at the PSI DPP office in Jakarta, quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, October 17.

On Monday (17/10), the Constitutional Court granted part of the lawsuit related to the minimum age of presidential candidates (candidates) and vice presidential candidates (cawapres) that allowed someone who was not yet 40 years old to run for president or vice president during his experience as regional head.

The decision, according to Kaesang, is very good because it opens up opportunities for regional leaders who are still young to become national leaders, even though they are currently open to their brother and Mayor of Solo, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to have the opportunity to run in the 2024 presidential election.

"Good, good means also in a sense for regional heads who are still under 30. There are several regional heads who can nominate themselves as presidents and vice presidents who are 25 years old can also just become regional heads," he said.

Through case decision number 90/PUU-XXI/2023, the Constitutional Court allows someone who is not yet 40 years old to run for president or vice president during his experience as a regional head or other position who is elected through general elections.

The lawsuit is related to Article 169 letter q of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections which originally reads, "The requirement to become a presidential candidate and a vice presidential candidate is: the age of at least 40 (fourty) years".

After this decision, someone who has/as a regional head or other state officials elected through the election can run for president or vice president even though they are under 40 years old.
