BMKG Early Warning: 5 Aceh Areas With Flood Alert Status Triggered By Heavy Rain

BANDA ACEH - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said five districts in Aceh Province had flood alert status triggered by high intensity rainfall, after the westernmost province of Indonesia began to enter the rainy season.

BMKG Class I forecaster Sultan Iskandar Muda Aceh Besar Nofrida Handayani Sodik said that of the 23 regencies/cities in Aceh, five of them have flood alert status in the next few days, namely Aceh Tamiang, Aceh Singkil, Southwest Aceh, Nagan Raya, and Central Aceh.

"There are (flood prepared areas), for today in Central Aceh and Aceh Singkil," said Nofrida as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, October 16.

Meanwhile, other regencies/cities in the province nicknamed Tanah Rencong have the status of being alert to potential floods, landslides, and other hydrometeorological disasters in the next few days.

Nofrida explained that currently Aceh has entered the rainy season. BMKG estimates that normally the peak of the rainy season in December-February, after which it begins to enter the transition season.

For the next few days, he continued, the weather forecast for the Aceh region is generally cloudy, but there is the potential for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and lightning which is quite evenly distributed in several areas of Aceh.

Therefore, the BMKG asked that if there was moderate to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, the community should stay away from areas such as rivers, beaches, lakes, reservoirs and others. And also avoid landslide-prone soils and trees prone to falling.

"The appeal for the people of Aceh is expected to always be careful when doing activities outside the room, especially when driving in rainy conditions in areas where there is the potential for bad weather," he said.

In addition, BMKG also remembers the potential for sea waves reaching 4 meters in Aceh waters, especially in the waters of the West Indian Ocean Aceh which reached four meters.

Meanwhile, the Banda Aceh - Sabang crossing waters are forecast for sea wave heights with a low category of 0.5 - 1.25 meters. For wind speeds in Aceh in recent days, an average of 10-30 kilometers per hour from Southwest to North.

"We also remind ferry service providers and fishermen not to force them to sail or go to sea in the event of high waves," he said.
