The North Nias M 5.1 Earthquake That Was Felt Up To Aceh Singkil Is Classed As Shallow

JAKARTA - BMKG reported that the 5.3 magnitude earthquake (M) which was transferred to M 5.1 in northwestern North Nias, North Sumatra, was a shallow earthquake.

Lindu, which occurred on Sunday, September 24 at 08.27 WIB due to plate subduction activity.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, explained that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 31 km at coordinates 1.86 North Latitude and 96.83 East Longitude, about 75 km northwest of North Nias.

"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has an upward movement mechanism," he said, confiscated by Antara.

He said, according to the results of the modeling of the earthquake that occurred in northwestern North Nias on Sunday morning, there was no potential to cause a tsunami.

According to BMKG, the earthquake was felt in the South Teupah, Simeulue, West Banyak Island, Aceh Singkil, Lahewa, and North Nias areas on the MMI IV intensity scale, when it occurs during the day, the vibrations are felt by many people in the house.

"Until now, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake," said Daryono.

He said that the BMKG as of 08.39 WIB had not detected any aftershock activity after the earthquake that occurred at 08.27 WIB.

Daryono appealed to residents to avoid buildings that were cracked or damaged by the earthquake and inspect residential buildings to ensure that no damage could endanger the stability of the building before returning to the house.
