North Sumatra Police Conclude The Death Of A USU Student Suicide Drinking Cyanide

The North Sumatra Police concluded that the cause of Mahira Dinabila's death, a student at the University of North Sumatra (USU), was committing suicide by drinking cyanide poison.

The conclusion is based on the results of an investigation conducted by the Directorate of General Criminal Investigation of the North Sumatra Police together with the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Medan City Police.

"The investigation to reveal the case of Mahira's death has been carried out optimally and thoroughly," said North Sumatra Police Criminal Investigation Director Kombes Sumaryono in his statement quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, September 20.

The police have gathered witnesses and evidence and tested by several experts.

"Then the results of the test were retested during the case on Thursday (14/9) which we agreed on and concluded that this case was a suicide," he said.

Since this case was handled in May 2023 after the discovery of the victim's body at the Rivera Complex Blok MCL No. 162, Medan Amplas District, Ditreskrimum Polda North Sumatra and Polrestabes Medan have carried out an intensive and comprehensive investigation to uncover the case.

"From this case, Polrestabes was backed up by the Regional Police and has carried out witness examinations as many as 30 people plus expert statements," explained Sumaryono who was accompanied by toxicologist ProfessorGelgel, psychologist Irna Minauli, language expert Dr. T. Kasa Rullah Adha, MTCSOL,'and North Sumatra Police Labfor AKBP Hendri Ginting Msi.

Meanwhile, the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Medan Polrestabes Kompol Teuku Fathir Mustafa said the investigation into the Mahira death case was carried out for three months using the scientific investigation process. This process begins with the discovery of the body, followed by processing the crime scene, securing evidence and further investigation.

"One of them is the discovery of evidence of cyanide type poison under the name of selling potas," he said.

In addition, from the examination of the items found at the TKP, namely in the form of packages aimed at the victim, an examination of the seller has also been carried out in the Bogor area and it is true that the victim bought the item using Tokopedia.

"We have also examined the parties from the online shop. We have also examined the witnesses and we can prove that the victim immediately took the package containing the cyanide with a certain level," he said.

Then from the examination of witnesses, campus friends and close friends of the victim, then based on data from documents and letters from the crime scene, the police obtained various kinds of cellphone data in the form of venting on the victim and overcrowding seeking information related to suicide.

"In connection with the results of our investigation and the title of the case on September 14, the conclusion drawn from the entire series of investigations was that our late brother died of suicide," said the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit.

Meanwhile, according to the statement from the North Sumatra Police Labfor, when the crime scene was carried out, a white plastic bag was found, one glass containing brown liquid, one tablespoon, one bottle spraying mosquito medicine, one plastic bowl and a blue glass bowl.

From the examination of the evidence, it was concluded that one plastic package contained cyanide and the brown liquid also contained cyanide. In addition, from the fluid of the victim's stomach, cyanide content was also obtained.

Forensic expert dr. Mistar Ritonga said that from a series of examinations carried out on the victim's body, there were absolutely no signs of violence or forced violence.

Likewise, in the examination of skull bones and anatomical pathology, no similar signs were found. "So, the cause of death of the victim, we conclude, is weakness due to entry or taking cyanide poison," said Mistar.
