BMKG: Rob Flood Alert Due To Full Moon

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has asked coastal communities to be aware of sea level in line with the full moon or full moon phase phenomenon which coincides with perigee or the closest distance of the moon to earth.

"The phenomenon of the full moon phase on August 30, 2023 has the potential to increase the maximum sea level," said Head of the BMKG Maritime Meteorology Center Eko Prasetyo as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, August 26.

Based on water level data monitoring and tidal predictions, coastal flooding or tidal flooding has the potential to occur in several coastal areas of Indonesia such as the coast of West Sumatra, the coast of the Riau Islands, the coast of Banten, the north coast of DKI Jakarta, and the coast of West Java.

In addition, the coast of East Java, the coast of Bali, the coast of West Kalimantan, the coast of East Kalimantan, the coast of Maluku, the coast of North Maluku, the coast of North Sulawesi, and the coast of South Papua.

The potential for coastal flooding or tidal flooding varies in time, both days and hours in each region, which generally has an impact on community activities around ports and coasts.

Activities affected by tidal flooding include loading and unloading activities at ports, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt ponds and land fisheries activities.

In detail, the coast of West Sumatra, namely the coast of Padang City, is predicted to have a tidal wave on 31 August-3 September 2023, the coast of the Riau Islands, namely the coast of Batam City on 30 August-5 September 2023 and the coast of the Riau Islands, namely the Dabo Singkep coast on 27-31 August 2023.

"The public is also advised to always be vigilant and alert to anticipate the impact of the maximum tide of sea water and pay attention to updating maritime weather information from BMKG through the official website," said Eko Prasetyo.
