Shallow Bangkalan Earthquake Shakes Pacitan, Due To Subduction Activities Of Indo-Australian Plates

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a shallow tectonic earthquake that rocked the Pacitan region, East Java, Sunday, July 23, occurred due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Eurasian Plate.

"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has an upward sliding mechanism," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono in a statement in Jakarta, Sunday, July 23.

The earthquake that occurred on Sunday at 19.33 WIB had an updated parameter of 5.5 magnitudes and had no potential for a tsunami.

The epicenter was located at coordinates 8.89 degrees south latitude and 111 degrees east longitude or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 79 kilometers southwest of Pacitan City, East Java, with a depth of 42 kilometers.

Daryono said that based on the results of monitoring until 19.55 WIB there had been no aftershock activity in the area.

He appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified.

In addition, the community must also avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake.

"Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house," said Daryono.
