Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts with Volcanic Ash As High as 2.000 Meters

LAMPUNG - Mount Anak Krakatau in the waters of the Sunda Strait, South Lampung Regency, Lampung has erupted again by throwing volcanic ash as high as 2.000 meters.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that the eruption occurred on Thursday, at 08.52 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 61 millimeters and a duration of approximately 3 minutes and 2 seconds.

"The height of the eruption column was observed to be around 2,000 meters above the peak or around 2,157 meters above sea level with a duration of approximately three minutes and two seconds," said Head of Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa District, South Lampung, Andi Suardi, reported by ANTARA, Thursday, July 20.

He said the ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity to the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 61 mm.

Andi appealed to the public and fishermen not to approach the Mount Anak Krakatau area within a five kilometer radius.

"Currently Mount Anak Krakatau is at level III alert with recommendations from the public, fishermen, mountain climbers not to approach the mountain within a radius of five kilometers," he said.
