Jokowi: The Wounds Of Past Serious Human Rights Violations Must Be Recovered Immediately

President Joko Widodo said injuries due to gross human rights violations (HAM) in the past must be restored immediately so that Indonesia can move forward.

"This is to restore the nation's injuries due to past gross human rights violations that leave a heavy burden on the victims and the families of the victims. Therefore, this wound must be restored immediately so that we are able to move forward," Jokowi said when launching the Program for the Implementation of Non-Judicial Settlement Recommendations for Past Serious Human Rights Violations in Pidie Regency, Aceh, reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, June 27.

Jokowi said that in early January 2023, the government had decided to pursue a non-judicial settlement that focused on fulfilling the rights of victims without negliging the judicial mechanism. Jokowi is grateful that the policy can be realized.

"We are grateful, thank God, it can begin to realize the restoration of the rights of victims of gross human rights violations in 12 events," he added.

According to Jokowi, the government is committed to making preventive measures so that similar things or gross human rights violations do not happen again in the future.

As reported by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD, victims and families of victims of gross human rights violations in Aceh have begun to receive training to improve work skills, guarantees of health rights, guarantees for families of hope, improvements in housing, and construction of a number of other facilities.

Jokowi emphasized that the government has a sincere intention to resolve gross human rights violations according to the recommendations of the Non-Judicial Violators Settlement Team

"And to the victims or the victims' heirs, I would like to thank you for the generosity of accepting this process after a very long wait," said Jokowi.

On January 11, 2023, the government admitted that there had been gross human rights violations in the past on 12 incidents.

The 12 incidents were the events of 1965-1966, the 1982-1985 Mysterious Shooting, the Talangsari Incident in Lampung in 1989, the Geudong Rumoh Incident and the Sattis Post in Aceh in 1989, the Disappearance of People Forces in 1997-1998, and the May Riots in 1998.

Then, Trisakti and Semanggi I-II incidents in 1998-1999, the 1998-1999 Dukun Santet Murder, the 1999 Aceh KKA Intersection Event, the 2001-2002 Wasior Papua Incident, the 2003 Wamena Papua Incident, and the 2003 Jambo Keupok Aceh Incident.
