Jokowi Doesn't Question Prabowo's Ukrainian-Russian Resolution Proposal: I See It's Just Good

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the proposal or proposal of Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto regarding the resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was not submitted in negotiations or state forums but only a seminar so it was allowed.

"In a dialogue, proposals are okay, it's just a suggestion, but not in a negotiation between countries, no. So, yes, I see it's good," Jokowi said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, June 14.

Jokowi said Indonesia's stance on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was clear, namely the importance of respect for sovereignty, the territorial integrity of other countries, and the push for the war to end soon.

Jokowi emphasized that Indonesia's attitude was when he met directly with Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"From the start it was clear and until now it has not changed that Indonesia has great respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, territorial integrity from other countries, fixed and unchanged," he said.

Jokowi admitted that he had summoned Prabowo regarding the proposed conflict resolution submitted by Prabowo in a discussion in Shang-ri La Dialogue 2023 in Singapore on Saturday (3/6).

"And when I invited, Pak Prabowo, it was the same. There was nothing different, that in one, and it wasn't, it wasn't a proposal in a state forum or negotiation forum, it was a seminar. It was a dialogue," said Jokowi.

Previously, Prabowo attended the IISS Shang-ri La Dialogue 2023 in Singapore on Saturday (3/6) where he had submitted a number of proposals for a peaceful resolution to the conflict that occurred following Russia's invasion of Ukraine since February 2022.

Prabowo submitted at least four proposals, namely a ceasefire at points of conflict, a 15-kilometer withdrawal of troops from both parties to create a demilitarized zone, the termination of the United Nations peacekeeping force (UN), and the implementation of a referendum by the United Nations in areas that Prabowo called "regions of dispute".

"PBB needs to regulate and implement referendums in disputed areas to ensure objectively the wishes of the majority of the population in these disputed areas," Prabowo said on Saturday (3/6).

The proposal drew mixed responses, including the official statement by Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko, who emphasized that he rejected Prabowo's proposal.

Nikolenko appreciated the effort to restore peace to Russia, but called the proposal "as drawing conclusions from its own history."
