Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD chaired the inaugural meeting of the Legal Reform Acceleration Team which he formed last month to overcome various legal issues in the country.
"Earlier we had a meeting after 13.00 and after this we will have another group meeting," said Mahfud MD as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, June 9.
He explained that the Legal Reform Acceleration Team was formed because of various legal issues found in the judicial and law enforcement sectors, as well as in other sectors such as agrarianism, natural resource management, land, corruption, and the establishment of legislation.
However, Mahfud emphasized that the Legal Reform Acceleration Team did not discuss cases per case, but rather a long-term solution to various legal issues in Indonesia.
This team will produce academic papers and a series of laws and regulations. But don't get me wrong. The results will still be channeled to authorized institutions. What must be issued by law will certainly be included in the National Legislation Program (national legislation program)," said the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, who is the Steering Committee for the Acceleration of Legal Reform.
The team whose working period ends on December 31, 2023, will discuss priority agendas, identify legal issues, and draw up recommendations for legal improvements in Indonesia.
"Furthermore, the results of this team's work will be submitted to the President to become a recommendation and consideration for the President," said Mahfud.
There are three recommendation categories that can be made by the Legal Reform Acceleration Team, the first which is short-term, namely until the end of the team's tenure on December 31, 2023, then recommendations for the end of the tenure of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Ma'ruf Amin in 2024, and comprehensive recommendations.
"Comparhesive recommendations which are then one of the policies to be implemented to the next government," said Mahfud MD.
Mahfud formed a Team for the Acceleration of Legal Reform as stipulated in the Decree (SK) of the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Number 63/2023 on May 23, 2023.
The team consisted of directors, chairmen, deputy chairmen, secretaries, and four working groups.
The direction position is filled by the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (ex-officio), team leaders by the Deputy for Legal and Human Rights Coordination (HAM) of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Sugeng Purnomo (ex-officio), Deputy Chair of Laode M Syarief (Ministry Executive Director), and the team secretary is the Deputy Secretary for Legal and Human Rights Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (ex-officio).
