Manchester City Stick Tight After Beating Liverpool, Premier League Title Is Too Early For Tottenham
JAKARTA - Tottenham Hostpur showed brilliant performance in the English Premier League competition. The 2-1 victory over Liverpool, September 30, made Tottenham start to stick closely to league leaders Manchester City. However, defender Micky van de Ven believes it is too early for Tottenham to compete for the league title.
Tottenham appeared with a new face with manager Ange Postecoglou. Even when he was appointed as the new manager, Postecoglou was already facing a job that was not easy.
How could he not, he had to lose the icon, Harry Kane, who moved to Bayern Munich. Kane is not only the North London club's mainstay captain and striker, but also the team's inspiration and motivator. He also showed loyalty even though Tottenham never won a trophy.
However, Kane finally had to leave and join Bayern, who were hunting him to replace Robert Lewandowski.
Without Kane, it turns out that Postecoglou was able to build a tough squad. They are impressive and have never lost in a competition.
The victory over Liverpool in a duel at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium means they have 17 points. The same as Arsenal, but Tottenham is superior in goal productivity compared to its neighbors so they can move up to second place.
Both Tottenham and Arsenal are only one point behind Man City, who failed to gain points after being defeated by Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1.
Not only that, Tottenham has an impressive record because they have never lost when they met members of the 'big six'. Before winning over Liverpool, they successfully beat Manchester United 2-0 and drew 2-2 against Arsenal.
Despite his impressive performance, Van de Ven believes that it is not yet the time to talk about Tottenham's chances of winning the league title. According to him, the competition is still long and anything can still happen.
"It's too early to talk about that. But we will keep trying and where we will be at the end of the competition," said Van de Ven.
"It's not yet the time to say that we are candidates for champions. We will only work hard because we want to have the best season. We are not afraid to face any team. We will play our way and hope that our performance continues to improve," said the Dutch national team player.
Tottenham has the opportunity to maintain a points gap with Man City if they beat promoted team Luton Town, Saturday, October 7. The Lilywhites could even take the top spot if Man City loses again in the last match before the competition is closed again because it is part of the national team match agenda.
