China Will Thwart Hazardous Information By Limiting The Use Of Data Transfers Through AirDrop And Bluetooth
JAKARTA - China plans to create new rules by limiting the use of wireless file sharing services between mobile devices, such as Apple and Bluetooth's AirDrop. This was created to prevent the spread of misinformation.
Protesters in China once used AirDrop during anti-government protests in October 2022 to share content and bypass strict internet censorship.
A few weeks later, Apple restricted the use of the AirDrop function on devices in China. The draft new regulatory proposal was issued last week by internet watchdog Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).
Under the new rules, service providers must prevent the spread of malicious, illegal information, keep relevant records and report their findings to regulators.
They must also provide data and technical assistance to relevant authorities, including internet and police regulators, when they carry out inspections. Even with users, who have to register under their real name.
Finally, CAC asks service providers to carry out security assessments when launching any new applications or functions capable of mobilizing the public or activating public expressions.
