BPS: The Number Of Domestic Air Transport Passengers Drops 11.04 Percent In February 2023

JAKARTA - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the number of domestic air transport passengers departing in February 2023 was 4.4 million people, a decrease of 11.04 percent compared to January 2023 which reached 4.9 million people.

"This decline is due to seasonal effects where February is a low season period and that in February the number of days is less, bad weather also disrupts flight activities," said BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics Pudji Ismartini at a press conference for Statistical Release News in Jakarta, quoted from Antara, Monday, April 3.

Pudji said that the decrease in the number of passengers occurred at all major airports, namely Kualanamu-Medan Airport at 25.30 percent, Ngurah Rai-Denpasar at 24.15 percent, Hasanuddin-Makassar at 13.20 percent, Juanda-Surabaya at 10.88 percent, and Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang at 8.16 percent.

The largest number of domestic passengers was at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang Airport, reaching 1.3 million people or 29.63 percent of the total domestic passengers, followed by Juanda-Surabaya as many as 364.4 thousand people or 8.28 percent of the total domestic passengers.

Furthermore, the number of passengers traveling abroad or internationally fell 4.40 percent to 1.1 million people. During January-February 2023, the number of domestic passengers was 9.3 million people and the number of international passengers was 2.2 million people. Each increased by 38.09 percent and 1,063.25 percent compared to the conditions in the same period in 2022.

The number of passengers traveling abroad (international) in February 2023 was 1.1 million people, a decrease of 4.40 percent compared to the situation in January 2023. The decrease in the number of passengers occurred at Ngurah Rai-Denpasar Airport by 15.07 percent, Kualanamu-Medan by 6.51 percent, and Juanda-Surabaya by 3.15 percent.

Meanwhile, the increase in the number of passengers occurred at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang Airport by 3.70 percent, while the number of passengers at Hasanuddin-Makassar Airport was relatively the same. The largest number of international passengers was at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang Airport, which reached 482.0 thousand people or 45.68 percent of the total passengers abroad, followed by Ngurah Rai-Denpasar as many as 343.2 thousand people or 32.52 percent of the total passengers abroad.

During January-February 2023, the number of passengers on air transportation abroad, both using national and foreign flights, was 2.2 million people, an increase of 1,063.25 percent compared to the number of passengers in the same period the previous year. The largest number of passengers abroad was at Soekarno Hatta-Tangerang Airport.

In terms of domestic sea transportation departing in February 2023, 1.3 million people were recorded, down 15.17 percent compared to January 2023. The number of goods transported fell 1.25 percent to 27.5 million tons.

During January-February 2023, the number of passengers reached 2.9 million people, an increase of 14.44 percent compared to the same period in 2022, while the number of goods transported rose 8.67 percent or reached 55.3 million tons.

"In February bad weather disrupted regular shipping activities, canceling shipping," said Pudji.

In the rail transportation mode, the number of train passengers in Java and Sumatra departing in February 2023 was 26.3 million people, a decrease of 9.50 percent compared to the previous month. Of this number, most of them are Jabodetabek passengers who are commuter passengers, namely 20.8 million people or 79.25 percent of the total train passengers.

The decline in the number of passengers occurred in all areas of Jabodetabek, non-Jabodetabek, and Sumatra, down 8.39 percent, 13.73 percent, and 11.51 percent, respectively. Similar to the number of passengers, the number of goods transported by the train decreased 6.08 percent to 5.1 million tons.

Most of the goods transported were recorded in the Sumatra region as much as 4.2 million tons or 83.17 percent of the total goods transported by train. The decrease in the number of goods occurred in all regions of Java non-Jabodetabek and Sumatra, down by 12.72 percent and 4.61 percent, respectively.

During the January-February 2023 period, the number of goods transported by trains reached 10.5 million tons, an increase of 25.30 percent compared to the same period in 2022. The increase occurred in Sumatra by 33.46 percent, on the other hand, the non-Jabodetabek Java region decreased by 2.75 percent.
