Inflation Increases To 3.27 Percent In August: Gasoline, Rice, Home Contracts To Sources

JAKARTA The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the general inflation rate or based on the Consumer Price Index (IHK) in August 2023 was 3.27 percent on an annual basis (year on year/yoy).

Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, BPS Pudji Ismartini, said that this figure was higher than July 2023 which was 3.08 percent.

"The largest annual inflation in transportation groups with gasoline commodities, city transportation rates, intercity transportation rates, diesel, and rail rates," he said during a press conference on Friday, September 1.

According to Pudji, other commodities that contributed to inflation last month were rice, filtered kretek cigarettes, house contract fees, garlic, and broiler meat.

"The highest inflation is in the city of Manokwari, which rose to 6.40 percent. Meanwhile, the lowest inflation is in Jambi City at 1.92 percent," he said.

Pudji added that monthly inflation (month-to-month) is known to have decreased (deflation) to 0.02 percent in August 2023.

"This August 2023 deflation is in line with last year's conditions, namely August 2022 with a lower deflation rate of 0.21 percent," he said.

Pudji explained that the largest contributor to deflation last month was the food, beverage and tobacco group with a deflation of 0.25 percent.

For information, the government targets this year's inflation rate to be 3 percent plus minus 1 percent yoy. Meanwhile, for 2024 inflation is expected to be at the level of 2.5 percent plus minus 1 percent yoy.
