Mahfud MD: Political Intrictions In Elections Are Legitimate, But Don't Create Splits

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD explained that one of the reasons for holding the general election was for the circulation of leadership.

"Where is this country determined by the people, by the people, and for the people so that it is not from the people, by the oligarchs, and for the elite. But, from the people, by the people, for the people. This is what the election is meant. For what? That is to implement or guarantee the circulation of leadership determined by the people themselves," said Mahfud at the event "Helter of Peace" at the Fairmont Hotel, Jakarta, reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 19 evening.

According to him, elections are a form of Indonesia is a democratic country. For this reason, he encouraged the 2024 General Election to run peacefully, smoothly, and with integrity.

"In the electoral process, there are political games, political intrigue, that's fine, but don't cause division and don't damage our life procedures in the state," he said.

Mahfud said whoever will win in the 2024 General Election or Presidential Election, the Indonesian people must receive the results.

"If there is dissatisfaction, we have a Constitutional Court. However, we want it and we hope that not too many cases will go to the Constitutional Court," he said.

Not only that, but the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs also hopes that the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) can carry out their duties properly.

"We hope that the KPU can carry out its duties well, guarantee freedom and smooth running. Bawaslu oversees its implementation," he added.
