WASHINGTON - The US White House deeply regrets Sudan's military decision to withdraw from peace talks with a paramilitary group of the US-brokered Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

"We want to see the fighting stop. We want to see help come in because it is difficult for the aid to get to people in Khartoum and in other areas in Sudan who desperately need food, water and medicine," said US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby quoting Antara.

"So it is very unfortunate that the military chose to leave (from peace talks)," he said.

According to Kirby, the US wants the Sudanese military to take the opportunity to make peace.

"We are certainly serious about it. We help hold and facilitate these talks. We want to see them act as they should," he said.

When announcing his resignation from peace talks, the Sudanese military said they were out due to a lack of RSF's commitment to implementing one of the terms of the agreement and persistent violations of the ceasefire.

The decision was taken when fierce clashes erupted on Wednesday, between soldiers and RSF fighters in the capital Khartoum and El-Obaid, the capital of North Kordofan state.

The seven-day ceasefire agreed by the military and RSF, through mediation by Saudi Arabia and the US, ended on Monday (29/5). The two parties in conflict agreed to extend the ceasefire period by five days.

At least 863 civilians were killed and thousands injured in clashes between Sudanese military forces and RSFs since April 15, 2023, according to Sudanese medics.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 1 million people have fled within Sudan's country due to the conflict.

The conflict has been fueled by disagreements over the past few months between the military and RSF about the integration of paramilitary groups into Sudanese armed forces.

The integration is the main requirement of Sudan's transition agreement with political groups.
