JAKARTA - Japanese Emperor Naruhito will visit Indonesia at the end of June, a government spokesman said Thursday.

The visit will be the first official visit of the emperor to Indonesia since taking the throne in 2019.

Launching Antara, Friday, the Queen of Masako, who has long struggled with stress-induced illness, will accompany the emperor if his health condition allows, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno.

Emperor Naruhito and Queen Masako were invited by Indonesian President Joko Widodo when he and his wife visited the Imperial Palace in July last year.

2023 is even after 50 years of friendship and cooperation between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Nine other countries that are members of ASEAN are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

This year, Indonesia will have its turn to become the Chair of ASEAN.

ASEAN is currently establishing several external partnerships with regional, international, and speech partners including Japan.

The Emperor and Queen of Japan last visited abroad while visiting Britain last September to attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

Emperor Naruhito's parents, former Emperor Akihito and former Queen Michiko, also visited Indonesia in 1991 as part of their first overseas tour after being crowned emperors years earlier.
