The Reason Mahfud MD Refused To Be Anies' Vice Presidential Candidate: It Turns Out Because Of This

YOGYAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD admitted that PKS had lobbied to become the vice presidential candidate for Anies Baswedan. But he refused because he was afraid that the Change Coalition for Unity (KPP) carrying Anies could be damaged.

"To the chairman of PKS, Pak [Ahmad] Syaikhu, when he went home with Al Muzammil, he explored to find Anies' vice presidential candidate. Among other things, he asked, 'Isn't Mr. Mahfud willing?' 'No' [the answer is]," Mahfud said at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Monday, June 5.

"I said, 'Because in the Mr. coalition there are NasDem, Democrats, and PKS, there are many candidates from their own party. Later, if I invite them there, I will destroy democracy. If one party (party) leaves because you invite me, it will be damaged," he added.

If the KPP bond is damaged, there is a possibility that Anies will not get a forward ticket in the 2024 presidential election. So Mahfud asked Syaikhu to continue to protect KPP.

"I said that to the PKS chairman, 'Keep the coalition, don't invite me to go inside so that the coalition doesn't break. If I go inside, it will break up later because someone doesn't agree and so on.' That's my job, guard the election and democracy," said Mahfud.

Until now, the Coalition for Substitution for Unity has not yet announced who Anies' vice presidential candidate is in the 2024 presidential election. However, the Coordinator of the Democratic Party Spokesperson, Herzaky Mahendra Putra, confirmed that the vice presidential candidate selected by Anies would surprise many parties.

"This couple will really surprise the coalitions and other presidential candidates. Because this is what the people have been waiting for," Herzaky told reporters, Monday, June 5.

"It can bring victory in the 2024 presidential election. In accordance with the expectations of the people," he added.

There are 3 candidates for vice presidential candidates who are being drawn by the Substitution Coalition, namely the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono ( AHY); Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa; and the former Governor of West Java, Ahmad Heryawan alias Aher.
