JAKARTA - A new study found that there are more than one million songs "manipulated" on streaming platforms.

Pex is a technology company that tracks and analyzes copyrighted content on digital services. According to their data in November 2023, there were more than one million songs that were accelerated, slowed down, or "modified" on music streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and TIDAL.

Examples include an accelerated version of Lady Gaga's Bloody Mary (25 million streams) and Childish Gambino's Heartbeat (19 million streams).

These songs, which are'manipulated', usually do not have official permission to use, meaning they violate copyright. Therefore, the original artist did not charge royalties for streaming the song.

Dalam wawancara baru dengan Music Business World, CEO Pex Rasty Turek mengatakan “ada banyak sekali orang yang mencoba menikmati konten seperti ini. Mixing-an Nightcore, dan seterusnya. Dan menurut saya, ada benih yang sah dalam gerakan ini. Jika orang-orang menyukai jenis musik ini, mereka pasti memiliki akses terhadapnya.

"But at the same time, proper distribution must also be needed," he continued. And it depends more on platforms and services than it depends on artists who go and fish.

Spotify itself is trying to counter the number of songs uploaded to their platform, along with the shift in royalty allocations. This month it was revealed that about a quarter of the music on streaming services was not played at all.

This follows news of Spotify's policy changes, requiring all songs on the platform to have a minimum of 1,000 streams before being able to get royalties.
