JAKARTA - South Korea's main cellular operator KT Corp., announced it detected a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, causing service disruptions nationwide, Monday.
Quoting Yonhap on October 25, KT service users throughout South Korea experienced difficulties in using some services, including internet, telephone network and payment services, starting at around 11.00 local time.
A DDoS attack refers to a situation where multiple infected computers are redirected to try to communicate with one other computer, overwhelming its connection bandwidth and preventing legitimate users from accessing the site.
While launching The Korea Herald, the company said the latest disruption was caused by a "large-scale DDoS attack on the network." KT said it was working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.
As of noon, KT appears to have restored most of its internet service, although disruptions continued in some areas.
