The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said that flooding in North Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra), caused 68 houses and two bridges to be damaged.

Head of BPBD North Kolaka Andi Faisal said floods in his area hit Watuliu Village and Batuganda Village on Monday, February 12 at around 19.00 WITA. Heavy rain accompanied by overflowing rivers in the two villages was the cause.

"The heavy rain lasted for approximately two hours from 17.00 to 19.00 WITA," Andi said in Kolaka, Tuesday, February 13.

He revealed that as many as 68 houses were submerged due to the flood, ranging from heavily damaged, moderate to light.

"In Batuganda Village, there are three houses, then in Watuliu Village as many as five houses were heavily damaged, 30 other houses were moderately damaged and 30 were slightly damaged," he said.

In addition to residents' houses, damage due to flooding also hit two bridges and a 50 meter long road connecting the hamlet in Watuliu Village experienced landslides.

"But the road is not totally damaged and can still be accessed," he said.

Andi said that currently his party is coordinating with the North Kolaka Regency Public Works (PU) Office and business actors in the area to normalize the river, as well as repair and clean the houses of flood-affected residents as a form of disaster management.

"We will continue to coordinate to provide assistance and deal with flooding in Lasusua District, North Kolaka Regency," said Andi.

He also added that the North Kolaka Regency Government (Pemkab) had also provided basic food assistance to residents who were victims of the flood to help ease their burden.
