PVMBG Reminds Residents To Beware Of Land Movements During Rainy Seasons

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reminded residents to be aware of land movement disasters that occur during the rainy season.

Head of the PVMBG Land Movement Working Team Oktory Prambada revealed that settlements that are included in the vulnerability zone of high ground movement have the potential to be affected by landslides because there are slopes, rainfall, and supporting lithology.

"The red zone area must be prepared to be aware of landslides, especially young volcanic areas because the rocks are not well consolidated, so they are prone to landslides," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 9.

Not only areas that have a steep slope, he said, areas near the river also have the potential for ground movement. River water attractions can erode river border areas and cause landslides.

Oktory said the form of anticipation of the soil movement was to build landslide-contained concrete. However, the safety system is ideally built during the dry season.

If the concrete buffers have not been built and have entered the rainy season, he said, residents are required to be vigilant and follow the latest information about the weather.

"We must be vigilant because we cannot prevent rainfall like this," said Oktory.

Oktory said that even though it is in the red zone of the ground movement, it does not mean that the area cannot be built a house or building. Through geotechnical engineering, he said, buildings can become stronger in dealing with environmental conditions, including the phenomenon of ground movement.

"Geotechnical engineering is not cheap because it involves engineering the foundation. Buildings for the vulnerability zone of high ground movement tend to cost more than building ordinary buildings in the low-earth eclipse vulnerability zone," Oktory said.
