JAKARTA - A number of areas in Indonesia have the potential to experience heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds today, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG) weather early warning.

As reported by ANTARA, Friday, February 10, there is the potential for heavy rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, namely in the Provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Bengkulu, Jambi, Lampung, Banten, West Java, DKI Jakarta, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara.

Similar conditions also have the potential to occur in West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.

BMKG said that tropical cyclone Freddy was still being observed in the Indian Ocean south of Java. This system induces an increase in wind speeds of more than 25 knots (low-level jet) in the Indian Ocean south of Central Java-NTB and forms an area of longitudinal convergence on the south coast of West Java-DIY, and in the Indian Ocean south of NTT.

These conditions, said the BMKG, could increase the potential for the growth of rain clouds and high waves around the tropical cyclone area and along the low-level jets or convergence.

BMKG explained, other convergence areas also extend from Mentawai islands to Lampung, in the Indian Ocean southwest of Lampung and south of Banten, from Central Java to the southern waters of NTB, from the Sawu Sea to the Timor Sea, from the Makassar Strait to the Banda Sea, from Southeast Maluku to southern Papua, from West Papua to Cenderawasih Bay, from New Guinea to Papua New Guinea, and in the northern Pacific Ocean New Guinea.

These conditions, according to the BMKG, can increase the potential for rain cloud growth around the center of low-pressure or cyclonic circulation and along the convergence or confluency areas.
