Eko Yuli Irawan Won Another Silver Medal For Indonesia At The Tokyo Olympics

JAKARTA - Eko Yuli Irawan's mission to win the Olympic gold medal again failed to materialize. Fighting in the men's 61 kg class, this Indonesian mainstay lifter could only win a silver medal. He lost to Chinese lifter Li Fabin, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Sunday, July 25.

Eko was only able to finish in 2nd place in the men's 61kg class with a total lift of 302kg, with a snatch of 137kg, and a clean and jerk of 165kg. This is Eko's second silver medal in the four Olympics he has participated in.

For the Olympic level, Eko is listed as a senior or veteran lifter. But he is very accomplished because he always gets a medal every time he appears in the Olympics. Now Total Eko has won two silver and two bronze. His dream of winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics failed. This makes Indonesian weightlifters have never won Olympic gold.

In the men's 61 kg event, Li Fabin won the gold medal with a total lift of 313 kg (141 kg snap and 172 kg clean and jerk). While Kazakhstan's Lifter Son Igor is entitled to a bronze medal with a total lift of 294kg (131kg snatch and 163kg clean and jerk).

The competition for the men's 61kg class gold medal has been felt since the beginning between the two world champions, Eko Yuli Irawan and lifter from China Li Fabin. Eko Yuli Irawan started the snatch and successfully opened his first batch weighing 137kg. Meanwhile, Li Fabin failed in his first lift with the same weight.

Eko Yuli tried to increase the load to 141kg on the second occasion. Unfortunately, the barbell failed to lift.

The match became even tenser when Li Fabin managed to lift the snatch 137kg on his second chance before increasing his weight to 141kg on the third try.

Eko failed to pay for the failure on the second chance because he again failed to do a 141kg snatch on his third attempt so that Eko's best snatch was only 137kg, while Li Fabin's was 141kg.

In the clean and jerk category, Eko managed to start the 165kg weight. Likewise with Li Fabin opened the 166kg lift.

Li Fabin again managed to clean and jerk 172kg on the second try and set an Olympic record. Meanwhile, Eko failed with a clean and jerk weighing 177kg.

The Lampung-born lifter had to settle for a silver medal after failing to do a 177kg clean and jerk on the last attempt.

Eko's achievement is the second medal for Indonesia at the Tokyo Olympics. Previously, lifter Windy Cantika donated a bronze medal in the women's 49kg class.
