ASEAN Cup 2024: 0-1 Loss To Vietnam, Indonesia Is Second In Group B Standings

JAKARTA - The Indonesian national team lost their first defeat in the 2024 ASEAN Cup after they were beaten by Vietnam with a narrow score of 0-1 through Quang Hai's goal in the 77th minute at the Viet Tri Stadium, Sunday.

In this match, Shin Tae-yong fielded three new debutants, namely Ahmad Maulana Syarif, Mikael Alfredo Tata, and Rivaldo Pakpahan. Cahya Supriadi as goalkeeper and centre-back trio of Muhammad Ferarri, Kadek Arel, and Dony Tri Pamungkas returned to play together behind.

Two senior players, Rafael Struick and Pratama Arhan sit on the bench, while Asnawi Mangkualam plays his first game as a starter in this match.

Overall, in this match the Indonesian youth squad in the first eleven had an average age of 21.2 years, while on the host side, they fielded experienced players with an average age of 28 years.

Vietnam's home team dominated the match more. However, the prestigious trio installed by Shin, Ahmad Maulana, Rivaldo, and Arkhan Fikri in the 3-5-2 formation was quite effective in reducing the attack by Kim Sang-sik's team.

As a result, Vietnam did not have a really dangerous chance, even though they controlled the game.

The shot was right on target of Hoang Duc Nguyen in the 33rd minute which started from a corner kick situation threatening the Indonesian goal. However, the player number 14's shot was still weak, making it easy for Cahya to secure.

In the 39th minute, Shin made a substitution. He put Rafael Struick in and pulled out Rivaldo who looked like he had a problem with his leg.

In the last five minutes, precisely in the 41st minute, Vietnam again threatened through the same situation, namely a corner kick, which was also still well secured by Cahya.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has repeatedly tried to attack through counter-attacks. However, the attack led by Hokky Caraka's buzzer still failed to pose a dangerous threat to Vietnam's goal escorted by Filip Nguyen.

Until the end of the first 45 minutes, no goals were scored. Both teams also drew 0-0 into halftime.

Entering the second half, Shin again made substitutions by bringing in Pratama Arhan and Victor Dethan to replace Mikael Tata and Hokky Caraka. Arhan fills the left back position, while Dethan fills the attack area accompanying Struick.

Unfortunately, this change did not make any significant changes in the course of the match. Vietnam still dominates the game. In the 53rd minute, Hoang Duc again became a player who threatened the Garuda team's goal with his left foot from inside the penalty box which was still above the crossbar.

Vietnam threatened again in the 64th minute. Starting from a quick counter-attack, their players provided a cross which was greeted by Tan Tai Ho. Unfortunately, the player's number 13 kick was still thinly sideways.

One minute later, Indonesia created the first shot of this match through Dethan who was still saved by Filip. This opportunity was created thanks to the neat cooperation between Dethan and Struick through a touch.

Three minutes later, the entry of Dethan again became a danger to Vietnam's defense, which from the first half always managed to counter Indonesia's attacks. The PSM Makassar player stabbed into the area of Vietnam's penalty box. However, when he was about to give feedback to his colleague who was in a more favorable position, his pass was successfully driven away by the defender of the team nicknamed The Golden Stars.

In the 86th minute, Quang Hai almost broke into Indonesia's goal again. However, this time Cahya failed his effort. One minute later, Vietnam got another chance through their players' shot which was still thin over the crossbar.

There were no additional goals until the referee blew the long whistle. Vietnam won their second victory today while breaking three consecutive defeats to Indonesia in 2024.

As for Indonesia, this is the first defeat after one win and one draw in the previous two matches. This defeat left them in second place with four points, two points behind Vietnam at the top.
