JAKARTA - Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman said Saudi Arabia supports the United Nations' efforts to achieve political solutions to the conflict in Yemen.

Prince Khalid's statement was delivered after a meeting with the Head of the Board of Presidential Leadership (PLC) of Yemen Rashad Al Alimi in Riyadh.

"I reiterate the unshakable support of the Kingdom for the PLC and the brotherhood of the Yemeni people, and the efforts of the UN envoy to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable political solution in Yemen that achieves peace and prosperity for Yemen," Prince Khalid said.

This comes a month after Saudi Arabia started peace talks with Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Sanaa, in a bid to revive the ceasefire and reach a political solution.

The talks resulted in a first-stage prisoner swap last month, when more than 300 prisoners were released.

Meanwhile, talks on the second phase of prisoner swaps scheduled to begin this month have been postponed due to disputes over delays in prison visits.

Earlier, Hans Grundberg, UN envoy to Yemen last week urged all parties to build progress and take firm steps towards a peaceful and comprehensive solution.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, Grundberg said he felt motivated by positive and detailed discussions, which he did with parties in Yemen and the region.

It is known that Al Alimi has been in Saudi Arabia since last Friday, after attending the Arab League Summit in Jeddah.

In its last communication, the Arab League urged support for its stalled peace efforts in Yemen.

The Arab League reaffirms international and regional efforts to achieve political solutions to the crisis.
