JAKARTA - Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) Wimboh Santoso plans to summon businessman Jusuf Hamka to clarify the statement that Islamic banks are cruel.

"We will call the person concerned to clarify whether his statement is true," he said in an official statement received by the editors, Saturday, July 25.

According to Wimboh, this summons is also a forum for finding solutions to the problems faced by the man born in Samarinda.

"If you feel wronged or there is a dispute with the bank, it can be resolved through the OJK," he said.

Wimboh added, OJK is committed to protecting consumers in the financial services sector as part of its main duties and institutional functions.

"This summons is in accordance with OJK's duty to protect consumers in the financial services sector," he said.

The authority hopes that if there are customers who have problems like those experienced by Jusuf Hamka, they can file a complaint with the OJK through the consumer protection department so that it doesn't drag on and create a bad image for domestic banks, especially Islamic banking.

"So the steps are like that, we will help mediate. We are very open if there are problems," he explained.

It is to be noted that Yusuf Hamka had made a slanted tone on Deddy Corbuzier's YouTube channel regarding the performance of Islamic banks which were deemed to be inconsistent with his views. According to Yusuf, at that time he wanted to pay off a syndicated loan with a value of Rp800 billion.

The money has been given through the loan holding account. However, the bank was deemed unwilling to accept the repayment and instead returned the funds amounting to Rp690 billion.

“Rp690 billion was returned, while Rp110 billion was said to be being held for interest payments or something. Now, this is a sharia bank which in my opinion is tyrannical, cruel," he said.

"As Ustad Yusuf Mansur said, let alone conventional banks, Islamic banks are more cruel," said Yusuf Hamka.
