JAKARTA - Two very senior EU officials plan to attend an artificial intelligence safety conference (AI) in the UK next week. The event, which lasts for two days, is expected to be the beginning of an international dialogue on AI regulations.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Vera Jourova, a Vice President, will attend the conference, according to an update on their official calendar released on Friday, October 27.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will host about 100 guests at Bletchley Park, a estate in the south of England where mathematician Alan Turing helped in solving the Code of Enigma from Nazi Germany.
Although Sunak hopes to ascertain Britain's role as world leader in AI regulations, some have questioned what this conference has achieved. Last week, Bloomberg reported that a number of world leaders, including German Olaf Scholz and Canadian Justin Trudeau, would not attend the event.
The European Commission previously refused to confirm whether any EU representatives would attend the event. They stated in September that officials were considering the possibility of participating in the European Union.

Although several world leaders, including the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, are expected to attend this conference, a complete guest list has not been announced to the public.
The UK government's agenda for the event, published earlier this month, includes discussions on technological advances that are difficult to predict and the potential loss of human control over the technology.
Matt Clifford, an investor in technology and one of the two main organizers of the event, recently told Reuters that the purpose of this conference was to start an international dialogue on AI regulation.
"This is not a parliament. We do not make laws. We do not make agreements. We try to invite various parties to dialogue that have very different opinions," Clifford said.
