JAKARTA - Kaspersky recently launched a comprehensive report highlighting the increasing dangers faced by small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in today's cyber threat landscape.

In its report, Kaspersky revealed that MSME employees in 2023 faced at least 2,478 attacks. This number is relatively stable when compared to last year.

The targeted attacks have a variety of methods, but the most common finding is the type of exploit attack. Where the cybercriminals try to exploit the vulnerabilities of MSMEs by using phishing emails, fraudulent text messages, and even using malicious YouTube links.

"Because MSMEs have contributed an extraordinary 90 percent of all businesses globally and contributed to 50 percent of the world's gross domestic product, according to United Nations data, there has been an increase in the urgency of stronger cybersecurity measures to protect this economic power," Kaspersky said in a statement.

According to Vasily Kolesnikov, one of the security experts at Kaspersky, awareness and investment in strong cybersecurity solutions should be a top priority to protect MSMEs from the growing cyber threats.

To protect your business from cyber threats, consider the following guidelines:

Provide basic cybersecurity hygiene training to staff. Simulate phishing attacks to ensure they know how to distinguish phishing emails.

Use protection solutions for endpoints and email servers with anti-phishing or Cloud-Based Endpoint Security capabilities, to minimize the possibility of infection via phishing emails.

Setting up policies for access to company assets, including email boxes, shared folders, and online documents. Keep updating and removing access if employees no longer need details to do their job or when they leave the company.

Creating regular important data backups is important to ensure company information remains safe in the event of an emergency.
