JAKARTA - China's Payment and Settlement Association warned Monday against the use of a ChatGPT backed by Microsoft and artificial intelligence tools due to "risks such as data leakage between countries."

"The payment industry staff must comply with laws and regulations when using tools such as ChatGPT, and must not upload confidential information related to the state and financial industry," the China Payment and Settlement Association said in a statement on Monday, April 10, quoted by Reuters. The association is managed by China's central bank.

OpenAI has restricted users in China from creating a ChatGPT account, but it still attracts great interest there, with companies vying to integrate this technology into their products and launch competing solutions.

Although Chinese residents cannot create OpenAI accounts, the use of virtual private networks and overseas phone numbers help some people avoid these restrictions to access the chatbox.

Italy has temporarily banned the use of ChatGPT and launched an investigation into alleged violations of privacy rules. Several countries in Europe are studying whether stronger action is needed.

China's enthusiasm for this chatbot has helped trigger a rally in stocks in the technology, media and telecommunications sectors (TMT), but analysts warn about bubble risk.

Economic Daily, Chinese state media, published comments on Monday urging regulators to step up surveillance and crack down on speculation in the sector.

Shares of China in the computer, media and communications equipment sector fell between 3.4% and 5.6% on Monday.

There is indeed a security risk if uploading important data, including financial data, to ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence tools. These risks include:

Data leaks: Data uploaded to ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence tools can be potentially leaked or accessed by unauthorized parties. This can result in violations of privacy and financial losses if the uploaded data contains very valuable information, such as very confidential financial information.

Data abuse: Data uploaded to ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence tools can be used illegally or abused by unauthorized parties. This can include theft of identity, fraud, or other criminal activities that can harm data owners.

Violations of regulations and policies: Uploading important data, including financial data, to ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence tools can also violate applicable regulations and policies, be it privacy regulations, company policies, or applicable laws. This can result in legal sanctions, fines, or reputational losses for individuals or companies that violate regulations.

Therefore, it is important for users to be careful and comply with the laws and regulations that apply in uploading important data, including financial data, to the ChatGPT or similar artificial intelligence tools. It is recommended not to upload data that is highly confidential or valuable to platforms or tools that are not trusted or do not have adequate security measures. It is always important to maintain caution in managing important data to protect privacy and security.
