JAKARTA - Amazon will again cut off employment (PHK) in the coming weeks. One of the most affected is Twitch and Amazon Web Service (AWS).

In an email to his employees yesterday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced another round of layoffs that would affect 9,000 employees.

According to the memo, the affected department includes AWS, Twitch's live streaming service, Amazon People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT) division, and its advertising arm.

Several quarters of slow revenue growth did occur in AWS, due to difficult macroeconomic conditions.

"Given the economic uncertainty we live in, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to further streamline our costs and numbers of employees," said Jassy.

"The main principle of our annual planning this year is to be slimmer while doing so in a way that allows us to firmly invest in the experience of major long-term customers that we believe can improve the lives of customers and Amazon as a whole," he added.

Jassy also explained the reason behind the new round of layoffs that were so fast than before. He stated that this was due to the fact that not all of his teams had completed an assessment of which positions should be affected by the layoffs.

"Instead of rushing through this assessment without proper diligence, we chose to share this decision because we had made it so that people got the information as soon as possible," Jassy said.

The same applies to this note because the affected team has not only finished making a final decision on which roles will be affected. After the decision is made (our goal is to complete it from mid to late April), we will communicate with the affected employees," he added.

The move came after Amazon laid off a total of 18,000 employees earlier this year. The e-commerce giant made massive signings sparked by the pandemic following the COVID-19 lockdown, seeing the tech industry as a whole explode as people use their computers more than ever.

Now, this is no longer the case because many people are back to their habits before the pandemic. Last year, Amazon also closed several of its physical stores and closed several business units.

Finally, Jassy also promised the company will provide severance pay, transitional health insurance protection and help find jobs elsewhere. This was quoted from ComputerWeekly, Tuesday, March 21.
