JAKARTA - TikTok launched a new feature where users can refresh their For You feed if their recommendations are no longer relevant. Other updates are also coming to prevent repeated recommendations for users to get a better viewing experience.

"There are times when people's recommendations no longer feel relevant or provide enough variety of topics," said TikTok in its official blog, quoted by VOI Friday, March 17.

"So we launched a way to refresh For You feed recommendations if they no longer feel right to you."

This new feature will remove previous interactions on the app and start creating recommended videos based on someone's time on the app since that date.

"When enabled, this feature allows someone to view content in their For You feed as if they had just signed up for TikTok. Our recommendation system will then start surfacing more content based on new interactions," TikTok said.

The new feature adds to the number of content control users already have to shape their experience.

For example, a user can choose to automatically filter videos that use certain hashtags or phrases from their For You feed, and say they're not interested in skipping future videos from a creator or that use a specific voice.

Enabling the refresh will not override any settings the user has chosen to enable or affect the accounts they are following.

On the other hand, TikTok has also provided some new insights on how to improve its recommendation system to avoid repeating content, and in particular, ensuring users don't display too much potentially harmful or triggering content.

"Removing content that we believe violates our rules, such as content promoting self-harm or eating disorders. Minimizes recommendations for topics that could have a negative impact if viewed repeatedly," TikTok said.

"Filtering out content with complex or mature themes from teen accounts is supported by our Content Grade system. Using this system, more than 65,000 videos about cosmetic surgery were disqualified from the teen viewing experience in the first two months of this year," he added.

In addition, TikTok endeavors to carefully place limits on some content that does not violate its policies, but which may impact the viewing experience if viewed repeatedly, especially when it comes to sad, sports, extreme dieting, or sexually suggestive content.

"With this in mind, our approach is to remove content that promotes or glorifies self-harm or our other policies, while allowing restorative or educational content, subject to how often such restorative or educational content is eligible for the recommendation," TikTok said.
